How to Prepare Your Goods Before Packers Arrive

2024-03-015 min read

Preparing your home before the moving team arrives can save hours and prevent confusion on moving day.

Sort and Declutter First

Go through every room and decide what to keep, donate or discard. Movers charge based on volume — moving fewer items means lower cost and faster work.

Separate High-Value and Fragile Items

Keep jewellery, important documents, medicine, laptops and fragile collectibles separate in a bag you carry personally. Do not leave these to be packed with regular household goods.

Empty and Clean Appliances

Defrost refrigerators at least 24 hours before the move. Remove water from washing machines. Clean microwave and oven. Disconnect gas connections safely.

Dismantle Easy Furniture

If you can safely dismantle beds, study tables or bookshelves, do so in advance. This saves the team time and reduces the risk of damage to doorframes during moving.

Label and Organise by Room

Mark boxes with room labels (Kitchen, Bedroom 1, etc.) and brief contents. This helps the team place items in the right rooms at the new home, saving time during setup.

Ensure Clear Access

Ensure there is clear access to all rooms, lift lobby and parking for the moving vehicle. Reserve a parking spot for the truck or tempo if needed.

FAQs

**Should I pack some things myself before movers arrive?** Yes, personal documents, valuables and fragile items you want to carry personally should be set aside. Leave the rest for the professional packing team.

**What if I have plants or pets?** Make separate arrangements for pets and plants. Movers typically do not handle live plants or animals.
